Rafa Cabrera-Bello to fail in recapturing his Open de España crown
While the bookmakers may have been a little harsh putting the returning winner as the tenth favourite to win the thing, we do agree that we think the chances of him doing the double here are slim. He’s 29th in the European Tour, failed to make the cut at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, or impress at the Italian Open nor BMW PGA Championship. It might seem simple to just back last year’s winner, but we’re predicting that to fail here.
But Rafa to make the top 5
That said, you don’t need to go for Rafa Cabrera Bello to win the whole tournament if you want to back him. And we do think bookies may have underestimated him somewhat meaning that he can provide quite the betting opportunity. Despite some recent wobbles he is still a fantastic golfer and one who we think will be looking at this as an ideal place for a comeback. We think he’ll fall short of winning but make it to the top 5. This means if you get some good odds in that direction, we’d certainly say it’s worth considering.
We always prefer to tell you that we think the bookmakers have got it completely wrong and there’s someone other than their favourite better placed for victory. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case here in our opinion. The first Spanish winner of the US Open and two time Open de España winner Jon Rahm may have some stiff competition in the form of five-time European Tour winner Tommy Fleetwood, but Rahm’s credentials mean we must agree with his position as top dog of the odds table.
Part of the reason we’re backing him is that Rahm’s not living on past glories. In 2022 Rahm broke the PGA Tour to par scoring record at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and won the Mexican Open back in May, his seventh time at PGA Tour glory. He’s also been oh so close to victory on several occasions, and we sense another victory to finally break through here. Big tournaments are always tough for backing a winner but if you’re going down that route Rahm remains an excellent choice.
Tom Lewis to break top 20
Moving away from the winners’ markets here to a broader look at the field of options. One of the most interesting markets is who will make the top 20 because it provides so many more betting options on lesser-known golfers. Our top prediction in this regard is that Tom Lewis will capitalise on his recent strong form into a very good performance here and make the top 20. In fact, we’ve been so impressed with Lewis that he could even make the top 10.
A sudden death showdown between Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood
Last year’s Acciona Open ended with a dramatic play off between Adri Arnaus and Rafa Cabrera-Bello, ending 3-4 in the formers favour. Looking at the extremely competitive line up this year, we’re predicting a similar result. We think that there will be perhaps a shot or two in it, and that could lead to some exciting prop bets. The tournament was founded in 1912
Between the beginning of this tournament and its move to a more international stage, many golfing stars were made. These include Ángel de la Torre, five-time champion, and Conde de Lamaze, one of two amateurs to ever win the tournament.
In 1972, it became one of the first events on the European tour.
A few years later, in 1975, the man many consider to be responsible for modernising golf in Spain, Arnold Palmer, made his presence felt. He was the only player under par that year, winning at -5.
Featuring several record breaks and pulse-quickening action throughout, the 1984 tournament which ended in a sensational final showdown between Bernhard Langer and Howard Clark, is considered by many to be the best ever.
An emotional night of sport took place in 1995, when Seve Ballesteros beat Ignacio Garrido by two shots to win his final game. The 2011 tournament was held after he died and was in many ways a tribute to one of the greatest Spanish golfers.
Sergio Garcia had his first professional tournament at the 1999 Open de España. He would win the tournament in 2002.
2013 saw a playoff between Felipe Aguilar, Max Kieffer and Raphaël Jacquelin go on for over two hours. The latter won after nine extra holes. It stands alongside the 1989 Dutch Open as the joint longest in the history of the European Tour.
The 2020 tournament was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 2021 saw it return in spectacular form and crown Rafa Cabrera-Bello as champion.

It remains the only major played on the old continent of Spain.
Open de España remains the third oldest on the European tour.
The record for wins is five. It is held by Ángel de la Torre, who won before it became part of the European tour in 1916, 1917, 1929, 1923 and 1925.
Post entry to the European tour, Seve Ballesteros holds the record for most wins at three. He won in 1981, 1985 and 1995.
Bernhard Langer achieved a sensational course record of 62 strokes in 1984. It remains a course record for the lowest final round and includes the biggest comeback by seven shots.
The lowest winning score was tied at 266 in 2003.
